Former LHS student and varsity basketball player, Mr. Allen is the new girls varsity basketball coach at LHS. From childhood until now, basketball has been a part of every phase of his life. He has experience both on and off the court, playing at Wheaton College and coaching at all different levels from youth girls to high school boys.
“Tim Allen is a former alum here and a former head boys basketball coach here,” explains Mr. Capotosto, Athletic Director at LHS. “He volunteered to be the assistant coach after he was the head coach here and most recently, he was head boys basketball coach at East Longmeadow.” As coach, Mr. Allen and his team won Western Mass in 2008. With lots of experience coaching boys at the high school level, coaching high school girls presents a new challenge to him. However, he is more than ready to take the challenge as Mr. Capotosto says that Mr. Allen is “an educator, a well-established head coach, and really stood out throughout the hiring process.”
Mr. Allen says, “I think these girls are really excited to learn on the court … they really work together and it’s always about what’s best for the team.’’ Even within a week of coaching his team, Mr. Allen says that it is clear they are hardworking and are well-bonded as a team. He emphasizes to his players that “it is really important to compete in every moment, and it’s really important to play for each other and have an ‘in this together’ mentality.”
Varsity player, Hanna Minardi, says, “Coach Allen is so supportive and brings a lot of energy to the team. We can’t wait to see where this season takes us!” Just like him, Mr. Allen’s family has a passion for the sport, having two daughters who have grown to love it as well.
Outside of coaching, Mr. Allen is a principal at Birchland Park Middle School in East Longmeadow. Similar to him, his wife is the principal at Glenbrook Middle School. Other than basketball, Mr. Allen enjoys playing tennis, skiing, vacation and riding. He is very hopeful for the upcoming season and is excited to get to work with a hardworking team.
